Fix Secure Boot Error in Windows 8.1

Well, as new attraction has arrived, so have the issues and errors. Soon after the release of this major upgrade, many unfortunate users raised certain moans and objections. You must have heard of the Windows update 8.1 for Surface RT being concealed by Microsoft itself, due to its disobliging attitude. Anyways, the authorities have properly addressed the issue and restored it in the Windows Store for downloading. Another issue of concern, as titled above, is the Secure Boot error.

Windows Secure Boot Error On Dell Fix

The said error is followed by a smooth upgrade process and successful deployment of Windows 8.1. The desktop appears with a watermark stating ‘Secure Boot Isn’t Configured Correctly’. Microsoft has taken notice of the dispute and has claimed that the error is almost limited to Dell and Asus PCs. Dell has also confirmed the issue and has proposed a valid workaround to resolve it.

  • The proposed manual fix by Dell is simplified for your ease in the following steps.
  • Restart your Dell PC and keep pressing F2 key continuously to enter the Setup Utility
  • In the variety of BIOS settings locate and go to Boot tab
  • Enter Secure Boot option by hitting Enter key on it and then make in Enable
  • Press F10 key to save the changes you made
  • Restart your computer and let it boot into Windows 8.1
  • By this point, the watermark should not appear on your Desktop screen
  • Restart your computer and go to Setup Utility again by pressing F2 key
  • On the Main tab, hit F9 key and select Yes to Load Optimized Defaults
  • Press F10 key to save the changes.
  • Quit the setup and go back to your login session

If in case, you cannot change the boot Secure Boot settings or it is greyed out, as reported by many users, load the default system configuration right away. The procedure is given in the steps above.

Note: The steps shown above are specified for Dell PCs only. If you do not have a Dell manufactured machine and still facing the issue, Microsoft has proposed three general solutions for you. Steps for these solutions are not specified, as they may vary from one brand to the other. Try each step, restart your computer with Normal boot, and see if the issue resolves. If it persists, try the next step mentioned.

  • Make sure the Secure Boot option is enabled in your BIOS. Enable it in case of incompliance
  • If the above measure was inoperable, reset your BIOS back to factory settings
  • As a last resort, reset your PC to factory state and Enable the Secure Boot option then

For the PCs with BIOS not containing Secure Boot option, users are advised to wait for Microsoft to release a fully functional fix for this issue. Do not be anxious, as it will soon be there.
